2 Stage : Acute gout stage Precautions of allopurinol

Allopurinol can make symptoms worse if treatment begins during a gout attack.

This is because allopurinol can make the uric acids stored elsewhere in the body move into the bloodstream, causing a sudden increase in blood uric acid levels.

Therefore, allopurinol should be given after a gout attack is over.

Use allopurinol as directed by the doctor. Continue to take allopurinol throughout the lifetime even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.

During allopurinol treatment, patients may not have any gout symptoms. Therefore, patients often stop taking allopurinol when the gout is under control.

Patient compliance with chronic allopurinol therapy is usually very poor.

Allopurinol makes some patients drowsy, so you need to be cautious about driving or using machinery.

Alcohol may decrease the effectiveness of allopurinol , so limit alcohol consumption.

Drink about 8 full glasses of water each day.

If a dose is missed, take as soon as possible.
